Overview

We are seeking an experienced Safety & Environmental Engineer to join an MOD delivery team supporting the ASRAAM weapon system programme.

This is a key role where you will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), ensuring that safety and environmental considerations are embedded throughout the lifecycle of a complex defence capability. You’ll contribute both to current in-service systems and future capability development.

This is an excellent opportunity to work at the forefront of defence safety engineering, influencing both current operational capability and future system development. You will play a critical role in ensuring safety, compliance, and mission success in a high-impact programme

Specific job skills

  • Lead the development and maintenance of safety and environmental management systems
  • Produce and manage key artefacts such as:
  • Safety & Environmental Case Reports (SECR)
  • Safety Management Plans (SMP)
  • Environmental Management Plans (EMP)
  • Hazard Logs and environmental assessment tools
  • Conduct risk assessments related to system changes, life extensions, and incident scenarios
  • Provide SME input into airworthiness documentation (e.g., release certification)
  • Facilitate and lead safety working groups and technical panels
  • Support internal and external audits
  • Provide safety advice for in-service incidents and issue resolution
  • Collaborate with MOD teams, delivery partners, and Design Authority (e.g., MBDA)

Contribute to future programme planning and safety qualification strategies

Essential skills and experience

  • A STEM qualification (RQF Level 4 or above)
  • Demonstrable experience delivering safety engineering or acquisition engineering outcomes
  • Strong track record of providing technical advice and leading safety activities
  • Experience working with safety cases, hazard logs, and environmental assessments
  • Ability to engage effectively with multi-disciplinary stakeholders
  • Experience within defence, aerospace, or highly regulated environments

Professional Requirements

  • Professionally registered with a relevant body as either:
  • Incorporated Engineer (IEng), or Registered Scientist (RSci)
